flushing the Quran
From the Associated Press:
Anti-American sentiment is running high in the Mideast because of a variety of factors, including a now-retracted report in Newsweek that Pentagon investigators had found evidence interrogators at the U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, placed copies of the Quran, the Muslim holy book, in washrooms to unsettle suspects and flushed a Quran down a toilet.
``We in principle don't reject anyone's visit to the Al Aqsa Mosque (compound), but we see in the visit of Mrs. Bush an attempt to whitewash the face of the United States, after the crimes that the American interrogators had committed when they desecrated the Quran,'' the militant Islamic Hamas group said in a statement on its Web site. I have to admit that I can't understand why this story is significant. Sure, on the one hand, it seems remarkable to me that interrogators could be so stupid, after all that has transpired with allegations of American mistreatment of militant Arabs; and if Newsweek reported this story errantly, then shame on them; and if they didn't then shame on them doubly for bowing to political pressures to recant; and so on, and so on... between the American media and the Bush White House, is there any way of ever knowing the truth about these things?
But, then, on the other hand: why don't these Muslims grow up? Is their religion so shaky that they have to throw a tantrum anytime anyone in the entire world ever says or does anything remotely critical of or demeaning to it? I'd like to know the statistics on the number of Christian scriptures and churches being desecrated every year. I'm certain the number is quite high. What's more, I'd like to know how many times these acts are perpetrated by the very people raising this fuss!
Of course the desecration of Christianity is not newsworthy because of the political and spiritual bias that determines newsworthiness. But I'm not concerned about getting press, and for one simple reason: our God is the true and living God, and Jesus Christ is his beloved Son. His is the only name in heaven and on earth by which all mankind must be saved. And all others - Mohammed included - are usurpers and liars.
Go ahead and burn our Bibles; destroy our temples - for we know they shall be raised again imperishable. And then Christ will be revealed in us, and all that was of the world will be exposed as fraud and rebellion, and finally judged by him who owns the keys to heaven and hell.

Well stated and delightfully politcally incorrect. Same goes for Saddam in his BVDs. Incredibly stupid, but why are people so worked up over it?
We can't have it both ways, however. We can't say we respect them and their religion and want to bring them freedom, democracy, and pay-per-view and then turn around and dump their holy writ down the john. Muslims are horrified that Christians toss their Bibles around and put them on the floor, etc. I agree that this fixation on the thing rather than what it represents is idolatry, but it's what they believe. I'm sure they think GW will liberate them if he has to kill every last one of them to do it.
Your points on the true religion are "right on", M. :-)
It's obvious that these people are incredibly dedicated to their religion - and everything surrounding it. This would include their literature. They are protective of it down to killing people and "throwing a tantrum." Is that wrong? I doubt they are placing more emphasis on the book than their actual beliefs, but they still find it to be insanely important.
I look at that and think that maybe Christians could be missing the point on how important every aspect of Christianity is. The Bible is the guide, and yet Christians do put it on the floor and in garage sales when it gets old. The Bible isn't the only thing in Christianity, but why don't believers get a little more upset when acts of violence against churches and the like are displayed. Should they? Shouldn't they?
Aggie, I laughed at your comment about Bush killing every Muslim in order to liberate them. I wonder how far from the truth that is - his rhetoric about bringing freedom and democracy to the world is scary.
JB, I can't seem to come up with anything less than an essay in response to your comment. But I'll try. I get very upset when people are hurt - Christian and non-Christian alike. But if someone desecrates a Bible or a church.. well, to be honest I feel more awe than anything. I feel awe because I know they are waging war against God in a clear way, and he cannot be mocked. Sometimes I admit I might take it personally and get angry, but ultimately I know that these actions are not my concern. Thatis not because it's unimportant, or because I think we shouldn't fight back. It's because the warfare to which scripture calls believers is spiritual - it's about the truth of God revealed in the Bible and the need for people to place their trust in Jesus Christ. And scripture even tells us not to fight as the world does, but through prayer and testifying of God's truth. Ultimately, I don't get angry because Jesus told us to expect such treatment, and because I know that God will vindicate his name in the end.
There is a verse, in Romans I think, that says man's anger does not bring about the righteousness God requires. I have seen that truth played out too many times.
